The numbers are no longer abstract. Earth is already 1.47°C hotter than pre-industrial times. The United Nations Environment Programme's 2026 “Limiting Overshoot” report admits what many feared: exceeding the 1.5°C threshold is now unavoidable, and even in the most optimistic scenario — with every country delivering on its climate pledges — peak warming will hit 1.8°C .

The conversation has shifted. This is no longer a debate about science versus scepticism. It is a conversation about survival.

When the Mountains Come Down

In Nepal, flash floods triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Tibet border have killed at least 1,385 people, with more than 5,000 still missing . The death toll continues to climb as rescuers pull bodies from the mud in Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Rasuwa districts. Across the border in India's Uttarakhand, landslides have erased entire highways, destroyed bridges and cut off villages. In Chamoli district alone, twelve villages with a combined population of 10,000 were severed from the outside world when boulders blocked the Parkhal-Dundi highway . Food trucks carrying essentials sat stranded. A bridge at Badijat village was swept away.

Residents know what is happening. “Arbitrary construction of tunnels and widening of roads are causing land subsidence,” said Anil Uniyal, a local. “Tree felling by government agencies has exacerbated landslides. Earlier, trees used to prevent boulders from rolling onto roads” .

These are not distant warnings. They are the lived reality of communities watching their homes disappear.

The 380 Million Left Behind

For India, the climate crisis has a human face, and it is exhausted. Approximately 380 million workers — roughly three-fourths of the nation's workforce — are engaged in heat-exposed labour . In Delhi alone, some 5 million informal workers face an impossible choice each morning: risk their health in brutal temperatures, or lose the daily wage that feeds their families .

“A construction worker in Ahmedabad who labours through 45-degree heat loses income, risks injury, returns to a poorly ventilated home that doesn't cool down at night, and has no social protection to fall back on,” said Kartikeya Bhatotia, co-author of a Harvard University white paper on extreme heat in India. “That's a labour problem, a housing problem, a health problem, and a finance problem, all at once, in a single day” .

Workers' organisations have urged the Labour Ministry to recognise heat stress as an occupational hazard, presenting community-led “heat registers” documenting lost wages, health crises and debt traps . The white paper warns that India may be significantly underestimating future heat risk because historical temperature records — shaped by cooling aerosols and irrigation — are not an accurate baseline for planning .

The Methane Problem Nobody Wants to Discuss

India is the world's third-largest methane emitter, releasing about 31 million tonnes in 2020 — nine per cent of global emissions . Agriculture dominates this profile, contributing 12 per cent of global agricultural methane, one of the highest shares worldwide. Livestock and rice cultivation are the primary sources.

The uncomfortable truth: India's current climate commitments do not identify actions to reduce emissions from agriculture, its largest methane source . Rice methane emissions are projected to rise by eight per cent between 2020 and 2030.

Methane is the fastest lever we have. Cutting it buys time. But time is precisely what we are running out of.

Overshoot: The Best of Bad Options

The UNEP report lays out a pathway it calls “overshoot, peak and decline” — allowing temperatures to temporarily exceed 1.5°C, holding the peak as low as possible, then bringing temperatures back down through aggressive carbon removal .

This is not a concession. It is a recognition of reality. “The 1.5 target is still the goal,” said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen. “But now we need to approach it differently from above” .

The costs compound with every year of delay. Every five years of high emissions adds roughly 0.1°C to peak warming. Reversing that requires pulling approximately 220 billion tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere — over and above whatever is still being emitted . Carbon removal cannot replace emission cuts. It can only supplement them.

No “Later”

The gap between rhetoric and action is not merely policy failure. It is moral failure. Mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage must happen together, at scale, and immediately. There is no “later.”

The next five years will determine whether we return below 1.5°C or lock in a hotter, crueller world for billions. For the worker in Delhi labouring under a 45-degree sun, for the villager in Chamoli cut off from food and medicine, for the families in Nepal still searching for the missing — the future is not a distant abstraction.

It is already here.
